Play Synopsis

When Bruno MacIntyre decides to rent his ramshackle cottage to summer tourists, the wacky merriment begins. Lorne Elliott, comic master of mirth and mayhem, takes us to Savage Bay on the south shore of Prince Edward Island, where the hapless Bruno turns to his clever and caustic Aunt Tillie for help in securing tenants.

First, the cottage, inherited with a bad reputation from Bruno’s ne’r-do-well father, must be renovated. Then, Bruno must duel with his aunt’s wry insults and sly plans, a sardonic would-be author, and two torrid tenants.

Elliott’s celebrated gifts for sharp-witted repartee and vivid characterizations are in full force. So, too, are Elliott’s keen eye and ear for our fumbling aspirations, bittersweet banterings, self-deceptions, hard-won wisdom, surprising tenderness, and zany outcomes.

The Fixer-Upper (formerly known as ‘Tourist Trap – A comedy in 7 phone calls’) is classic Lorne Elliott, with a brash and cheeky Maritime flavour.

The Fixer Upper was originally shown in Charlottetown in 2010 … to rave reviews.  It had two successful runs in Newfoundland in 2011 and 2012 and was presented again at the Port Stanley Festival in 2014.

Theatre Wakefield is also happy to welcome back Karen Cromer.

If you went to see “Spitfire Dance” at last year’s Ta Da! Festival, then you will already know her.

If not – here is a short(ened) bio:

Karen has been acting professionally for over 20 years. She has worked in film, television, voice, and on stage. She is also a singer and musician, and is a member of the band Coveralls.

She has appeared in numerous stage productions including Inherit The Wind at The Segal Centre, Kindertransport, Shirley Valentine, and Prodigy in Montreal theatres, and Harvest and Last of the Red Hot Lovers at The Piggery in North Hatley.

She appears frequently at the Hudson Village Theatre, including Murray McLauchlan’s musical – Eddie, Looking, Girl in The Goldfish Bowl and A Snake In The Grass. Her film and TV credits include: X-Men- Days of Future Past, 19/2, Being Human, and Fatal Vows.

Karen won a META Award for the production of Oklahoma! which she co-directed, and she was nominated for a M.E.C.C.A. award for Kindertransport.

Lorne Elliot has had such a long career, his bio would take up far too much space.
