Here it’s common for a caregiver to prescribe a young child with a Selective Serotonin Uptake Inhibitor (SSRI) but hesitate to prescribe an antibiotic to counteract a potential infectious-based trigger. For some of these kids, what happens after several years is shocking and sad.

But more than 30 years ago, Susan Swedo—a doctor with the National Institutes of Health—discovered that an undiagnosed strep infection was the cause of one child’s disabling illness. The more Swedo dug, the more evidence she found: Strep was linked to symptoms normally chalked up to psychiatric illness.
She also discovered how non-accepting modern medicine can be of new ideas.

Swedo has put her reputation and career in jeopardy as she fights to cure the condition she named: Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). Neurologists Jonathan Mink, Roger Kurlan, Harvey Singer and others publically ridicule Swedo and her PANDAS theory, creating controversy over diagnoses and treatment. This group has become known on social media as the “non-believers.” The result: the entire pediatric-care industry is confused and doesn’t know what to do.

And it’s the children who suffer.

A message from your hosts, Wakefield residents,

Susie and Martin Fournel,

P.A.N.D.A.S. DISEASE - Our youngest son Caleb contracted this disease at age 5, we were totally in the dark and were told that nothing was wrong with him.

My husband and I are hosting the Canadian Premiere of the documentary « My kid is not crazy » to raise public awareness on this brutal and cruel disease that affects young children.  We are also trying to educate and update Doctors and University Medical Schools with the latest research done on PANDAS.

Seeing our son`s health change completely overnight, not knowing what was wrong, became a living hell for 2 1/2 years. No family should suffer as we have, and this is why we are soliciting our Provincial and Canadian Government to act on this issue so our children receive proper treatment . No child should have to live with a mental health issue, knowing a cure is possible.

We acknowledge, recognize, and respect that we live, work, learn and play within the traditional unceded, unsurrendered territory of the  Anishinaabe Algonquin People.
